The ability to understand and share the feelings of another is effortless when we consider what is gained through empathy in action. Through active listening, advocacy for empathy becomes personal.
Because it is personal in nature, this is a movement that:
starts with curiosity and ends with action.
can be employed at any time and must be practiced until it becomes as natural as breathing.
is boundless once the sense of separation from one another is released.
fulfills both the giver and recipient.
Empathy Activism requires an internal change.
The beauty of this change is that we all have the capacity to become empathy activists in our lives and work when we mindfully listen to learn rather than respond.
Remember moments in your life when you were unapologetically curious? This curiosity led you to Albert Einstein’s “holy curiosity.” Holy curiosity motivates you to seek to find through multiple facets of learning.
Empathy is like this. The more you learn about people you perceive as different, the more you are inclined to be open to further discovering who they are rather than what you think they are.
This discovery expands our field of vision to realize that the perceived divide between us is a bridge connecting our humanity to one another.
In the center of this bridge, our unique self, “me,” meets humanity, “we,” up close and personal. To reach this pivot point, we must embrace curiosity, vulnerability, compassion, and altruism.
As a result, recognition, dignity, and self-worth are laid bare. This recognition leads to greater understanding, connection, and fulfillment in our lives, work, and communities.
