I met Alicia in class at Dominican University of California. Right away I was struck by her empathetic nature. At times it seemed students spoke up mainly to hear themselves talk. In contrast, Alicia seemed as interested in asking questions. It was clear she wanted to enter into a dialogue. Even now, whenever I speak with Alicia, I feel listened to. In my field of environmental restoration, I’m often asked to bridge opposing points of view. That can’t be done without empathy, and yet I find many colleagues lack that trait. This is why the mission of Alicia’s organization makes sense to me. If anyone can succeed at shifting humanity from “me” towards “we” she can.
